In short... some channel #news related links and info:

Live breaking news headlines are, of course, available on EFNet channel #news
The channel is +m(oderated) so (especially during large/global/popular events) people don't have to filter through a bunch of chatter to get live news. During certain events or global situations, it has been a tradition of EFNet (and UN channels like #news) to mass together with other users urgently trying to get or provide news and information. As such, there are pre-designated users with the ability to provide formal information and reports directly in channel #news as well, either via other ops or existing (emergency/urgent) functions provided by UN and the United Networks website. At times, certain non-affiliated users are also allowed to temporarily provide reports on #news, especially when they are close to an event or on the front-lines.

That said, in any situation, channel #newschat was created for the purposes above, but is unmoderated and (unless necessary) does not include the live news feed, and is also for general chat discussions regarding news and events around the world.

UN was the first to bring live news feeds to IRC, and helped pioneer the facilitation of mass/global events that result in droves of people around the world desparate to be informed and provide information. We were there when several HUGE earthquakes hit, when certain other LARGE natural disasters happened, when the Soviet Union fell, when certain war events broke out, when globally famous people died, when aircraft and spacecrafts had disasters... and mostly any other time...

UN was also one of the first to provide news feed formats for users and organizations to utilize, including formats in all text, all html, raw, IRC, as well as RSS. The webpage designated for utilization of above mentioned IRC events and feed-related streams has been http://networks.org/?feed=news-cast

The other official #news related website other than http://networks.org/?feed=news-cast is, of course, http://networks.org/?feed=news

We all (users and UN-affiliates) appreciate and enjoy working together as a global team and force that helps out and informs one-another.. and we'll continue to do so.
